Moreover, an increase in the level of sebum on the head can result in hair loss. The only way to prevent this from happening is reducing the sebum levels on the head. Here are a few ways to treat oily scalp in men.
Treatment using lemon
Take a lemon that is large in size, juicy, and ripe. After cutting the lemon in half, deseed it completely. Part your hair after combing it in two halves so that your scalp is revealed. Squeeze the lemon and then, apply the juice that comes out of it over your scalp. Apply it on your scalp using the piece of lemon. Massage the scalp with it until no more juice is left. Now, use the other piece of lemon similar to the way you have used the first half of the lemon. Leave the lemon juice on the hair and let it dry for about forty five to sixty minutes. Then, wash your scalp and hair using clean water. This will remove any traces of lemon from the scalp and the hair. Try this treatment every alternate day. This will curb the scalp from generating more oil and prevent hair loss by letting the hair grow by opening up the clogged hair follicles.
Treatment using Fuller’s Earth
The clay that has valuable properties and is known to treat acne and oily skin can also get rid of excess oil from the scalp. Add some water to Fuller’s Earth and then, apply it over the scalp. Leave it on the scalp for about fifteen minutes or so and then, use some cold water to wash the hair. When you begin to wash the hair, give the scalp a good massage till it begins to give you a tingling feeling. This will open up the follicles by stimulating them. After a single wash, your hair will look shiny and feel smooth. The scalp can be rid of dirt and oil. Follow this home remedy twice a week to keep the scalp free from oil.
Treatment using baking soda
Baking soda has the ability to absorb oil, which makes it an invaluable face wash for oily skin. You could even use it to treat a scalp that is extremely oily. Take a little water and three teaspoons of baking soda and make a paste out of it. Massage this paste onto your scalp. However, make sure that you do not cause any damage to the hair while doing so. Let the paste remain on the scalp for about fifteen minutes. Then, use some cold water to wash the scalp. You can use some shampoo to wash the hair. If you suffer from hair that is excessively oily, then you should follow this home remedy every day. Otherwise, follow this home remedy thrice a week.
Treatment using white vinegar
The acetic acid present in white vinegar is helpful in the removal of oil from the scalp. Combine one cup of white vinegar and half a cup of water. Apply this solution of white vinegar on the scalp. Let it dry for some time. If you are not fond of the smell of white vinegar, then apply some lavender essential oil to your scalp too. Use clean water to wash the hair once it dries. White vinegar will prevent the scalp from generating excessive oil. It will also cure dandruff that is the cause of hair loss. Moreover, it will get rid of any bacteria that cause infection in the scalp.
Treatment using tomato juice
Mash a ripe tomato and squeeze some juice from the pulp. Take some Fuller’s Earth and add it to the juice that was extracted from this ripe tomato. When you do this, you would be ensuring that the juice from the tomato does not drip while it is being applied. Wear a shower cap after applying the juice of tomato to your scalp and let it be on for half an hour. After half an hour, wash the tomato juice with some cold water. As you remove the tomato juice from your scalp, massage it. This will stimulate the hair follicles.
Treatment using malt vinegar
Malt vinegar is not the same as white vinegar but works in a similar fashion. It removes the dirt and the oil from the scalp after a single wash. Take a little baking soda or salt and half a cup of malt vinegar. Massage this solution on the scalp and spread it over the hair as well. Leave this solution on for about fifteen minutes. Use some cold water to wash your scalp. Follow this remedy four times in a week if you are not suffering from dandruff. Otherwise, follow it every day.
Treatment using Aloe Vera gel
One of the best ways to treat oily scalp is the use of Aloe Vera gel. You can always wash it off with some shampoo after the treatment. Mix a teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel that you have extracted from a fresh leaf of Aloe Vera and a tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix these two ingredients well and apply it to your scalp. Let this mixture react with your scalp for a few minutes. Use some water to rinse it off completely. Store the remaining mixture in your refrigerator for about a week and use it every day.
Treatment using egg yolk
Egg yolk can help remove excess oils from the scalp and also on your hair. Beat two egg yolks and add two drops of lemon to this egg yolk mixture. Now, apply this mixture to your wet hair. Now, let it be there for five minutes. Wash the mixture off thoroughly so that no residue is left behind. Get rid of an oily scalp by using the egg yolk mixture on your scalp at least twice or thrice a week.
Treatment using black tea
The tannic acid that is present in black tea helps prevent the excessive build-up of oil on the scalp. It achieves this by tightening the pores. Add a cup of water to one of two tablespoons of black tea. Boil it for ten minutes. Then, strain the tea leaves. Allow the mixture to cool down so that it comes to room temperature. Apply this mixture on your scalp. Let it be on your head for about five minutes. Then, rinse it off. If you want, wash your scalp with a mild shampoo. Follow this home remedy twice or thrice a week to get rid of your oily scalp.
Do not over-massage
When you constantly play with your hair or simply run your fingers through it, the oil glands present in your scalp get automatically activated. The best way to stop making your scalp so oily is to stop touching it. Otherwise, even the natural oils present in the hands get stuck to the head.
Choose good food
What you consume affects the different glands in the body directly. In case you consume or go for processed fats, they may cause your hair to be oily. Choose healthy fats or fresh foods whenever possible. Choose food sources that have less sugar and oil. Eat foods that are rich in protein. Your hormones will keep your oil glands working and will balance out.
De-stress with yoga or Pilates
When you feel stressed out, you would find that your hormones start working. That implies that your hair follicles would also start overworking. This makes your scalp extremely oily by overproduction of the sweat glands. Reduce your stress levels by doing yoga exercises or Pilates. Relax as much as you can during the day. Follow this home remedy at least twice a week if you want to get rid of an oily scalp.
Treatment using henna
Apply henna to your scalp once or twice a week. Henna not only conditions the hair but it also has a drying effect, which is highly beneficial for an oily scalp. Henna will also help protect your hair and nourish it.Mix 2 tablespoon of Reetha and 8 tablespoons of henna powder. Add some water to it to form a thick paste. Apply it to the scalp. Let it be on your scalp for 30 to 45 minutes. Use some clean water to wash your hair.
Treatment using beer
Through its drying effect, beer can calm an oily scalp. Using some beer to wash the scalp and the hair would not only control the oil but also make the hair smooth and shiny.
Treatment using apple juice
The acid that is present in apple juice will help dry the excessive oil from your scalp. Moreover, the enzymes present in apple juice help remove the dead skin cells that further cause flakes on the scalp. Take two tablespoons of apple juice. Stir well after mixing it with warm water. Apply the mixture on your scalp and massage it well. Wash your hair with some warm water to remove the sticky paste and dandruff. This will leave your hair looking smooth and shiny. Follow this home remedy for about ten days.
Treatment using talcum powder
Talcum powder functions pretty much like a dry shampoo in that it reduces the oiliness of the hair. Sprinkle some talcum powder on a comb with narrow teeth. Brush the comb from the root to the tips of the hair. Take care to see to it that you use only a small amount of talcum powder or your hair will end up looking white in colour. However, do not use this treatment very often since you may have to wash off the talc from the hair and the scalp the very next day.
Treatment using peppermint leaves
If you want to remove the greasy look of your hair, then you should consider using peppermint leaves. This is because of the astringent properties of the leaves prevent the excessive production of oil by the hair follicles and the scalp. Put a handful of mint leaves in two glasses of water. Allow it to boil for twenty minutes. Take an organic shampoo and add it to this mixture. Apply the mixture on the scalp and let it be there for about 20 minutes. Wash the hair with some cold water.
Treatment using table salt

Treatment using witch hazel oil
Witch hazel oil is one of the best remedies for an oily scalp. Prepare a mixture of four tablespoons of witch hazel oil and two tablespoons of water. Use a cotton ball to apply this mixture to your scalp. If you are expecting better results, follow this home remedy three to four times a week.
Treatment using oatmeal
If you would like to treat your oily scalp, then try oatmeal. This will give you a fresh look. Cook some oatmeal. Let it cool down till it comes to room temperature. Massage gently after applying it on your scalp. Let it dry for about fifteen minutes. Use some clean water to wash it. Use some shampoo to wash your hair completely if you want. Then, dry your hair with a towel.
Treatment using banana and honey
Mash a ripe banana well in a blender or mixer. Add three to four teaspoons of honey to it. Let this be on your scalp for half an hour. Use some lukewarm water to wash the hair. Make sure that the banana does not remain on your scalp. If you would like to remove the oiliness from your scalp, follow this home remedy at least once every week.
Treatment using green tea
Green tea contains not only antioxidants but it also contains other ingredients that help reduce the damaging effects of free radicals and inflammation. It also helps in treating skin infections, psoriasis, and pimples. The antioxidants that are present in green tea helps in fighting rashes, dandruff, and the irritation of the scalp while the tannins that are present in it function to prevent the oiliness of the scalp. Brew a potent liqueur using green tea. Then, strain the liqueur and let it cool down till it reaches room temperature. Rinse your hair after washing it with a mild shampoo. Dry your hair with a towel and make sure that you do not wash away the tea from the hair.
Treatment using corn flour
The ingredient that is commonly found in the Indian kitchen is corn flour and it also helps soak up the excess grease and oil from the scalp. It also makes the hair smooth and shiny. Since it is a rich source of Vitamin E and fatty acids, it reduces the breakage of the hair and helps nourish it from the root to the tip.
Treatment using orange peel
The peel of orange is a rich source of Vitamin C, calcium, and antioxidants, which helps remove the grease and the oil from the scalp. Grind a few peels of orange and add two teaspoons of honey. Apply this mixture on your scalp and allow it to remain on the head for about twenty minutes to half an hour. After some time, wash your hair with a mild shampoo, making sure that no residue remains on the head. You can also alternatively use orange powder by grinding the dry peels of orange.
