There was a nice line saying that “Lordy, Lordy, who is 40”.

The big 40 is nothing but a mile stone for the people which signal for a transition of life from Young to Middle age, almost, more than middle, which is near to take a “senior citizenship”.

This is a very important age where your life starts facing health problems a lot, it is not only a transition stage of age even in physical way also people will face many changes and even challenges too.

Let’s go through the set of problems, followed by care taken to prevent and reduce them.

Healthy life style choices will help you to get rid of these problems, let’s discuss.

Reduce your weight which reduces stress at your joints.

Prostate cancer

According to experts, men have a higher chance of developing kidney stones as compared to women. Your hormones are the real culprits behind the formation of kidney stones. Estrogen prevents a compound called oxalate and calcium from bonding and this results in kidney stones.

Oral cancer

This malignancy is caused primarily due to chewing tobacco. Eating oranges instead can prevent the formation of cancer in the mouth.

Smoker’s cough and other respiratory diseases

When a man turns 40, he is likely to begin suffering from various respiratory diseases such as the “Smoker’s Cough,”COPD or emphysema. The good news is that even some occupational hazards can result in respiratory problems. It is not always smoking that causes them. However, this does not imply that you should continue smoking.

Liver disease

The functions of the liver include absorbing nutrients, digesting food, and getting rid of the variegated toxic substances in the body. According to a recent study, men are at a higher risk of developing liver related diseases than women. Diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis or even genetic liver diseases can develop in men above the age of 40 years.


Pneumonia is one of the health problems that men above 40 years of age suffer from. Men who suffer from AIDS, have compromised immune systems, congestive heart failure, diabetes, etc. are likely to develop such complications. Getting yourself vaccinated on time can prevent pneumonia.

Unexpected weight gain

Men gain weight very quickly when they turn 40. However, men do not tremble at the thought of this even though it can actually lead to health problems later on in life. Of course, this does not imply that men would like to have trembling bellies or man boobs. Dieting and exercising are the only ways to prevent this from happening. The other way in which you can prevent unexpected weight gain from affecting you is by visiting a doctor and asking him or her to help you find out your Body Mass Index or BMI and formulate a diet accordingly. This is a more effective plan.


Not to be confused with osteoarthritis, this is a health condition in which the bones in the body become weak. It also affects the bone mass in men. You must take calcium regularly if you would like to prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis in you.


The condition in which the tendons in your body become inflamed is known as tendonitis. It affects the heels, elbows, wrists, hips, shoulders, etc. This condition occurs due to the overuse of some of the tendons in the body.

Hearing loss

Hearing loss occurs in most men when they reach their 40s. This is one of the common problems in men above 40 years of age that is caused due to various factors including ageing.


Mouth and stomach ulcers are caused in men above 40 due to ageing. It is very common in them and can be cured by visiting a doctor.

Changes in vision

When men turn 40, they need glasses for distance as well as reading in order to be able to see clearly. You might also notice that your sense of smell and taste are not as strong as they once used to be. Sometimes, you might also find that you are suffering from serious visual problems such as diabetic retinopathy, etc. These conditions need to be treated on time so that they do not result in further visual problems or even blindness.


Changes in your mood may be a normal part of life. However, extreme anxiety can be a cause for concern and that is exactly what men above 40 go through. Anxiety can further cause other psychological as well as health problems.


Many health problems affect men as they age. However, if you can prevent them well in time, you would not face them. Your 40s are the best time to start caring for yourself if you have not already done so when the time was right.
